As part of our family journey, I think we should also be relating the loft extension that we have just embarked on.
Because the three bedroom house that was “way too big for what you need” according to friends six years ago, has become way too small for our needs six years on.
At the moment the twins have the smallest bedroom. It’s been more than fine for three years, as both their cots fit perfectly and there is also space for a wardrobe, a couple of cupboards, bookshelf and chest of drawers. They only go into their room for sleeping, so it’s not like they need lots of space anyway. However, the cots are getting a bit small and they are going to need toddler beds pretty soon.
So! Our current office (both Jon and I work from home, plus we also have “desk-based” hobbies) will become the kids room. It is considerably bigger but they will still share a room. Their current nursery will become a guest room, exactly as it was before we had the twins with an ikea day bed that can open to turn into a double bed.
And then, the extension upstairs will create two more rooms and a small toilet/shower room. One of the rooms (the bigger one) will be our new office and the other one will be the kids play room. The plan here is that we move all the crap, I mean toys, from the living room into the play room, so the living room becomes a nicer place to be in. At the moment it is always (and I mean ALWAYS) full of crap, I mean toys, everywhere. And it doesn’t matter how often we tidy, it will always be untidy and messy again within a few minutes if the kids are around.
The builders have been in for just a week, although we had the scaffold installed two weeks ago. So far so good. They seem to be advancing at good speed. In just a week we already have the velux windows installed at the front of the house!
I will keep updating as the work progresses.
