So…the Spare Room becomes the nursery…
Sorry Alan, my good friend, you won’t be kipping in the spare room anymore!
That little room, has put up my mother law, my parents during hard times, one of my best mates during some very difficult times, and been a traditional box room. Now it will excel itself by providing sanctuary for my first born(s).
That’s multi-tasking! The spare room is female.
It’s also rather petite, so designing the layout has been quite a squeeze. We actually searched quite a lot on the interw3bz about different furniture but the price tags were insane, so we resolved that, once again, IKEA would be our saviour.
You can see below our original sketch and cutouts to arrange the room. We tried probably 10 different arrangements before settling on this one as the only one leaving room for a nursing chair, as well as allowing for a wardrobe, and a changing table, and space for a sizeable stinky-nappy bin.
We have actually bought all the stuff now, and in the process replaced the Malm drawers with a conventional changing table for reasons of practicality related to the radiator, and easy access to common supplies.
We found a much nicer wardrobe than we saw online, and also found matching wall units which will go on the wall, probably above the cots, for extra storage.
Everything is bought, but I need to rent a carpet shampooer, clean the carpet and let it dry before I begin the build. As luck would have it, we chose baby safe colours when we decorated the room 2 years ago, so paint and decor wise, it’s already baby-ready.
It’s worth mentioning that a very good friend of ours thought we were preparing way too soon; since the babies will stay with us for the first 6 months, but we already need somewhere to store all the baby stuff people have been kindly donating to us! That’ll be in another post….
Perhaps she was right, and I am getting ready too soon, but thats the Project Manager in me, preparing for the financial and resource issues we will face in the coming months. Spread the load – fail to prepare = prepare to fail.
I’ll keep you posted with the nursery progress over the next fortnight!
