The twins are two and a half years old. I honestly don’t know where time is gone. I was filling in some paperwork the other day, and I kept staring at the 2013 date like it was a mistake… “Hang on, surely that didn’t happen in 2013… it can’t have been that long ago…”
And here’s the latest update.
Feeding
There hasn’t been a huge change in this respect in the last month. The only difference that I’ve noticed is that they keep asking for cake! I think they’ve had a couple of birthdays at nursery lately, and the parents of the birthday child tend to take cake to share with the class, and that’s what made them want cake all the time. Funny thing is that they don’t like cake that much. They are very picky! We’ve made cupcakes from scratch twice this month and they enjoyed that a lot. Then we bought some plain old madeira cake in the shop the other day, and they weren’t so keen. And finally, we went to a friend’s house for tea on Sunday and she made cakes and the twins simply said that they were “yucky” (I’d like to know where they’ve learnt that word from)
Sleeping
The only change in this respect lately is that we are not forcing naps any more. At nursery they tend to sleep more often than not, so at least they are still getting some naps. However at home, we are not pushing them any more and they seem to be coping quite well. Bedtime arrives and they are still fresh, not too grumpy at all. We’ve had a small spout of illness recently (more below) and that has made bedtime a little more “interesting” a few times, but having/not having had a nap would not have had much of an impact anyway.
As I just said, they have both had a few health issues this month, and when Eric gets ill he tends to want mummy to sleep with. So he has woken up a couple of times in the middle of the night wanting mummy, and we’ve had to bring him with us. Not the end of the world, but our bed is not that big and mum and dad then don’t have a good night sleep.
Development
I attended the Parents Evening at nursery a couple of weeks ago and everything is going quite well with their development. Both carers are quite content that they are developing correctly and they say that they are both very nice children who behave very well most of the time. Dropping them off at nursery has been quite a challenge lately, probably in the last 6 weeks or so. I have no idea why, but despite having a great time when they are there, they don’t like saying goodbye, and more often than not we have crying/clingy children. It breaks my heart.
We still haven’t started potty training properly. One of the NCT girls has successfully potty trained her daughter, so I think maybe the time is getting nearer for us to give it a proper go. They still sit at the potty before bath almost every night, and Eric wees almost always. Elisa sits and tries but she’s not always successful.
I have decided that I am going to start a behavioural chart for bedtime routine. They have started “rioting” against bathtime and getting them to brush their teeth is really tough. So I have looked into sticker charts for “bath”, “brush teeth”, “brush hair”, “drink all milk”, “say goodnight”.Or something along those lines. The carers at nursery say that they respond very well to stickers, so definitely worth giving it a go.
Socialising
We have had quite a few socialising events in the last few weeks and I must admit that they have been great. They saw their cousin Olivia a couple of weekends ago and they played briefly together at the soft play. We also went to a Halloween party with a few children of their same age and they played together very well from almost the beginning (I thought it would take them a little while to warm up but it didn’t). And we have also seen their friend Marc a couple of times and they’ve been ok (not as well as I expected, but they didn’t shy away either).
Health
Yeah, not great. We’ve had quite a bad month actually. Lots of coughing from Elisa first, that took a long time to disappear. Then she got poor health, I don’t know exactly what, but she had quite high temperatures for a few days in a row. She seemed to get better one day, only to get a fever again the following day. I had to pick her up from nursery at least three times in a two week period. And when Elisa finally got better, then Eric got ill as well. Probably the same that Elisa had. But he will be fine for an hour or two, and then he’ll be like “down” or “sad”, not wanting to play or anything. A bit of raised temperature but no fever. He’s been like this since Friday, so I’ve got a feeling that tomorrow Tuesday I may get a call from nursery to pick him up too.

And this is it for now. Here’s a photo that they had done at nursery recently. You can’t imagine how happy I am with it, as they NEVER smile for photos! I hope they learn to do it as they grow older, as I am getting a tad tired of not having many smiling photos!
