Today is our fourth full day at home and I think that we are finally settling into the routine again. The first couple of days were hard, as we didn’t have the help of the midwives and suddenly we realised that we had to do everything ourselves… But it is slowly getting easier. Getting up in the early hours of the night for feeds is really tough, and sleep depravation can be a real pain, but we are getting used to it and last night for example wasn’t *that* bad…
The days are okay. Jon does all the house work and cooking, for which I am forever grateful. I feel fine, but I also get tired quite easily. And then we share the nappy change and the feeds. I do the breastfeeding of both at the same time, and then we each take a child for the bottle top up. Annoyingly enough, Eric and Elisa seem to sleep and rest better during the day and it’s in the evenings when they decide to make all their noises and stay awake. Still, they do not cry much, which is great.
We’ve had visits from Community Midwives at home everyday since we got discharged from hospital. Mainly for me, and not for them, as my c-section wound didn’t heal properly and it has been oozing some blood, so the midwives come to keep an eye and to change the dressing. But they also check on the twins and we’re happy to report that they are both doing fine and their weight is now higher than their birth weight (all children lose some weight in the first few days, but E&E didn’t lose too much and have now fully recovered it).
Eric has had some gooey yellowy discharge from his left eye for the last three or four days, and we thought that it could be conjunctivitis, but the midwives are not very concerned. They think it’s quite normal and they’ve just asked us to clean it often with cooled boiled water and cotton wool. If, however, it hasn’t cleared by the end of the week we should go to the GP and have it checked.
Yesterday we ventured out of the house for the first time with the twins in their pushchair. It was only a short walk around the neighbourhood, but it was lovely. Although E&E were sleeping all the time, I think they enjoyed it and having the sun shining in their faces for ten minutes also did them good. For me it was great to finally be out and about after such a long time feeling “imprisoned” (antenatal and postnatal), however by the time we got back home I was feeling a bit off. My section wound was a bit painful and I had a slight headache, which doesn’t happen very often. Today the weather was good again but I decided not to go out and stay at home resting. We’ll find time to go out again soon, I’m sure.
