So I am in week 5 of my pregnancy. I have finally discovered how the week-thingy works… You start counting since the first day of your last period. However, because we went through IVF, I know exactly the day of fertilization… so no need to count much 🙂
According to the NCT, in week 5…
…the embryo is beginning to develop. Three layers (ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm) will form which will in turn become all the tissues and organs in the body. The nervous system, digestive tract, brain and heart will begin to develop. It is at around five weeks that the heart will beat for the first time (WOW!!!)
The embryo is now the size of a sesame seed (3mm) so you will not have a ‘bump’ for a while yet and it is more than likely that no one will notice you are pregnant. However, you may notice the symptoms of pregnancy more in week five. These can include (let’s see)
- Sore breasts – YES
- Tiredness – YES
- Going off certain foods or developing cravings for other. Often coffee becomes disliked –NOTHING HERE YET
- A metallic taste in your mouth – NO
- A need to urinate more often – YES, BUT MY BLADDER IS TINY ANYWAY
- Nausea – NO
- Sickness – NO
I am not looking forward to the nausea and morning sickness… Although I have read in several places that not all women suffer from it.. so that would be a bonus!
From next week onwards, Jon and I will be keeping a photo diary. It will be months before we see any changes, but it will be fun!

Today I was very close to telling some friends about the pregnancy, but I thought it twice and didn’t do it in the end. It is way too early still.
One side of me is dying to tell everyone. This is awesome news, and I have gone through a hell of a journey to get here, so I want to share it with the world. The other side is a bit more cautious and knows that I should wait until the fist scan as a minimum.
So let’s keep counting weeks!
