Yesterday I had my egg retrieval. Jon and I arrived in the Frey Centre in Southampton with about 15 minutes to spare from our appointment time (which was lucky, because the traffic to get into Southampton was rubbish) and there were no parking spaces available at the front of the centre. Luckily, there’s a Sainsbury’s nearby with free parking for two hours so that’s where we left it.
We checked in the reception, and 5 minutes later a nurse came for us. I think her name was Joanna or something like that, I didn’t quite catch it. She explained what was going to happen, took my blood pressure (which was the highest that I’ve ever had), I undressed and put on one of those amazing hospital robes, said goodbye to Jon, and i sat in the recovery room waiting for my turn.
As I was waiting, the lady that was recovering from her procedure woke up and we talked a bit. I must have been visibly nervous because she told me not to be scared. She said what the nurse had already told me: I will be sedated and won’t feel a thing.
And off I went into the theatre. Once again my “exotic” name was the conversation topic and whilst i was being readied all the nurses and i were having this conversation about Spanish naming conventions and what their names would have been like if they kept their fathers AND mothers surnames. It was hilarious and I was glad that everybody’s spirits were so high. I was then given the sedatives, I closed my eyes and I don’t remember a thing after that! The first thing I remember is waking up in the recovery room once the whole procedure had passed!
So, they removed 8 eggs, which is brilliant. The lady before me only had 2. They will call me today (Saturday) to let me know how many, if any, have fertilised and to discuss the quality of the eggs and their recommendation on how many to trasfer. Hopefully the egg transfer will be on Monday (because I’ve already asked for time off at work) rather than Wednesday as they said it could be an option.
The journey back home wasn’t bad at all, and I was thinking how exagerated the nurse was when she said to go home, rest and take strong painkillers. However, when i got home and sat down all the pain started to arrive. It wasn’t bad pain, only period-like cramps, however I normally deal with these with a hot-water bottle, but I was told I couldn’t use one 🙁
I had a little nap in the sofa downstairs and I woke up a bit rough and bleeding, although I had been told to expect that.
All in all everything went as planned and I am getting more and more excited each day! Fingers crossed that everything works!
